The school stands at the edge of the Lake Iroquois escarpment, on land farmed by the pioneer family of Bartholomew Bull from the 1820's, and not subdivided until 1910. The portico over the main entrance was repaired in 2007 through an initiative of the Regal Heights Residents' Association and the City of Toronto.

Corso Italia Grand Prix 2004

Aug 17th Corso Italia

This Monday's run/walk will include St. Clair Avenue - Corso Italia neighbourhood - followed by a swim at Giovanni Caboto pool and gelato?? (adult lane swim 7-8pm - free entry)

St. Clair Avenue got its name by accident and a spelling mistake. The Grainger family owned a farm near Yonge St. and St. Clair in the 19th century. A Grainger child, Albert, didn't have a middle name and decided to give himself a name from his favourite book, UncleTom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The name he chose was "St. Clare,"; the name was often misspelt as "St. Clair." In fun, Albert painted "St.Clair"on a sign and nailed it to a tree on his farm. His sign remained nailed to the tree, and when surveyors came to map out the road, they took it for a street sign and called the second concession St. Clair Ave. (Allan Gould, "Toronto Street Names", 2000)

Meet every Monday 6:30 p.m. at the Chelsea Lofts, 1375 Dupont Street (SE Corner of Dupont and Lansdowne) for an easy-paced run or walk.

http://www.regalheights.ca/

On June 15, Regal Heights

Friends and Neighbours,

"While much of Toronto is flat land, unique geographic features set the Regal Heights neighbourhood apart. The most prominent is the 50 to 75 foot bluff -- called Davenport Hill or the Davenport Escarpment -- just north of Davenport Road which marks the shoreline of a prehistoric lake that was formed at the end of the Ice Age, about 12,000 years ago.

Tributaries of Garrison Creek also shaped the local landscape. Springmount, Alberta and Mount Royal Avenues were built on top of or close to the actual creek bed." (RHRA)

Enjoy the view! Meet Monday, 6:30 p.m. at the Chelsea Lofts, 1375 Dupont St. (SE corner of Lansdowne and Dupont) for an easy-paced run or walk through Regal Heights. The run is 5km using the 10 minute run, 1 minute walk format and the distance of the walk is 4km. Every week there is a different route with maps provided.

On June 1st, meet up at the Dufferin Grove Park Clubhouse!!

Hi Everyone,

Nice turnout last week for the route to Christie Pits - no sign of a riot between the runners and the walkers!

Two meeting locations for the June 1st Walk or Run to Trinity Bellwoods:

1. Chelsea Lofts, 1375 Dupont (Lansdowne & Dupont) 6:30 p.m. (longer run-9k distance)

2. Dufferin Grove Park 6:45 - 6:50 p.m. (4.5 k distance)

"On May 13, 2008, Heritage Toronto unveiled a plaque celebrating Toronto's history to commemorate the secret bridge buried beneath the north-west corner of Trinity Bellwoods Park. The Crawford Street Bridge, an elegant triple-span structure, crossed the deep ravine cut by Garrison Creek where it entered the park. . . When the city needed a place to dispose of the rubble from the Bloor-Danforth subway excavation in the 1960s, the north-west corner of the park became its dumping ground."

Easy pace run or walk/Everyone welcome.

From Bev: Meet 6:30 p.m. at the Chelsea Lofts, 1375 Dupont (SE corner of Lansdowne and Dupont) for a green trek through Wallace-Emerson, Dovercourt and Christie Pits Parks.

Christie Pits

"The bowl-shaped park was, in fact, originally a pit. The Christie Sand Pits were named after Christie Street, which was named after William Mellis Christie, one of the founders of the Mr.Christie cookie manufacturers. The City acquired the land through a tax sale in 1907, and opened the land as a park.

The park was named Willowvale in 1908, and was increased in size through other land purchases up to the 1920s. It was the site of the riot of 1933, when a fight between Nazi sympathizers and Jewish and Italian immigrants after a baseball game turned into a riot involving up to 10,000 people." Local athlete and personal trainer Bev Coburn gave an inspiring talk after the May 8 Friday Night Supper. Bev leads the everyone-welcome Monday Night Run/Walk, exploring different parts of the neighbourhood. Here's the news of this week's outing: The Victoria Day's West Bend route is a nice downhill run/walk along Indian Road, Indian Road Crescent, Indian Grove and Indian Trail.

The Monday Night Run/Walk group meets 6:30 p.m. at the Chelsea Lofts, 1375 Dupont Street (SE corner of Lansdowne and Dupont). Easy pace, everyone welcome. 647-347-3906, beverley.coburn@gmail.com
