Weekly Market Notes for December 12, 2013

Hello Market Friends:

Last week I had the fun task of looking around the market for little gift ideas, and there are so many! Here are a few suggestions:

  • cinnamon honey sticks and beeswax candles from Bees Universe
  • nice big chocolate bars from ChocoSol
  • Cosmic Tea, Holiday Herb Blend, and pretty little chocolate bars from Kind Organics
  • soothing creams, gentle soaps and lots more from Earthly Paradise
  • Wild Saskatoon Mustard, Dried Chestnuts and Maple Butter from Forbes Wild Foods
  • delicious cheeses from Best Baa and sweet treats from DeFloured to take along to parties
  • Carrots with Kick, Morning Glory Jam, Autumn Chutney and many more preserves from Spade & Spoon (see below)

Bring an extra bag, there's lots to cross off your grocery list, too:

Angelos is back from harvesting olives in Greece, so Country Meadows will be in the usual corner of the rinkhouse with olives, oil, eggs and cheeses.

Excellent news from Plan B! The Bousfields, who used to press a lot of cider for the market, have resumed operation, and Alvaro will bring two litre jugs of fresh-pressed cider in for us this week and next. It freezes well.

Andrew Akiwenzie says it's fishing weather. He'll be down from Georgian Bay with plenty of fresh whitefish and even some caviar. He might be frozen in for a while after this....

Ali Harris (Fish Shak) will be absent this time.

“Introducing Spade & Spoon (formerly Growing Spaces): We've finally unveiled our new name and logo! For a long time we've wanted to come up with a name and logo that better represents what we are bringing to the markets, artisanal preserves and goods grown and made by us, field-to-fork (or spade to spoon). Come check out our new labelling and visit our website to see our product list and read our story www.spadeandspoon.ca. You can also follow us on Twitter, befriend us on Facebook, or check out our photography on Instagram. For the next couple of weeks at the market we will be bringing gift wrapped preserves for the holiday season. They make great stocking stuffers, gift exchange items, host/hostess gifts, etc. Happy Holidays!" Blythe and Adam

Sosnickis' contribution: "A nice selection of crops for this market from our farm: Apples (I always forget to add apples to our offerings, and our trees kicked out a bevy this year!!), Potatoes, Onions, Carrots, Beets, Garlic, Cabbage, Celeriac, Leeks and Kale from the field still!! Lots of Perogies, Cabbage Rolls and Raw Sauerkraut too. Thanks for the positive feedback regarding the vegan Perogies - we are glad everyone is enjoying them! Sadie and I are coming to work and sell tomorrow with Ben, so we can't wait to see everyone!" Jess, Ben & Sadie

See you at the market!
