Weekly Market Notes for February 22, 2007

Hello Market Friends:

We'll have a full house again this week, but weather mild enough that we can keep the doors open a little more. Before you know it the tents will be out again. Plans are in the works for our outdoor season, and when summer comes we expect to see more new markets opening in Toronto. Behind the scenes, we're preparing some information to share with policy makers on what we've been working on at Dufferin and what we hope for in the future of Toronto's community-supported markets. Many of you have been with us as the market has grown and evolved; we welcome your thoughts and input.

Here's our news from the vendors:

From Greenfields:

"Beautiful sunny day at Greenfields today; a sure sign that our season is coming near! Great Fruits and Veggies available this week. Our LOCAL Greens are at their peak in both flavour and freshness! I have just washed the last buckets of our Sunchokes so get them while you can. More Raw Milk buttons and posters for sale; many thanks for your continued support." Mark

Reminder: this Saturday is the benefit for Michael Schmidt. Tickets are available at the rinkhouse or by reservation at 416-606-0764 (Orly Dinar). Read more at: www.symphonyinthebarn.com/

From Urban Harvest:

"Urban Harvest will be at the market with seeds again this week but then won't be back until March 15th. So pick up your pepper and eggplant seeds especially as they need an early start. We will be at the Stratford Garden Show and then right on to Canada Blooms. We will also have Earthly Paradise lotions and potions this week. See you there." Colette

From Akiwenzies' Fish:

"We are coming down but unfortunately no fresh fish. The open water is a quarter of a kilometer out and thick pack ice is closest to the shore. There has been very little wind and temperatures above zero: beautiful days to fish if we could get free. Andrew is presently down at the shore trying to break up the ice that holds the boat so if by chance the wind picks up and moves the ice out, the boat is ready to go. We tried to find other fishermen but they too are just waiting for a bit. Sorry for the lack of fresh fish but we are just waiting for the hint of spring. Wiarton Willie said only 6 weeks till spring and this will be week 3. Hopefully he was right." Natasha Akiwenzie

Whether Willie was right or wrong we'll be in good spirits. See you at the market!

Anne
