Weekly Market Notes for February 23, 2012

Hello Market Friends:

This week I've been thinking about the foods many of us have 'discovered' at the market because of our wonderful and diverse vendors: greens like mizuna or callaloo, wild and crazy-delicious heirloom tomatoes, drinks like kombucha, flowers to eat, hemp pesto and tofu jerky...(add your own items here). Food is so much fun! This winter the surprise star has been the watermelon radish, whose lowly exterior belies its flamboyant insides. I've observed it moving steadily from the 'might try one of those' to the 'gotta have it' category.

More favourites are in development: "The park bakers are trying out new recipes in the hopes of discovering the perfect sandwich bread. New this week will be challah bread -- take one home and let us know what you think!" Anna Bekerman

[Editor's note: I was a willing guinea pig for the test batch last week, and I'll be first in line this time.]

Sosnickis news:

"Ben and I have launched a new website! Please check it out: www.sosnickiorganics.com! Please join with us on all platforms of social media to keep in touch, and keep 'farm-informed'!

We've also been hearing all sorts of interesting media opinions regarding migrant workers in Ontario lately following the tragic accident that happened in Hampstead. I feel it important for everyone to read our farm's story and experience with these reliable, amazing farm workers on our blog: http://www.sosnickiorganicproduce.blogspot.com/2012/02/we-wont-farm-without-mexicans-our-story_19.html?m=1

A familiar face will be selling our food this week- Toshimi! A lot of you will remember her from Greenfields' gorgeous, heaped tables over the years! Toshimi will be helping us so Ben can deliver and spend extra time on farm to attend to getting the greenhouses going. We'll be bringing our Leeks, Celeriac, Potatoes, Perogies, Sweet Corn, Sauerkraut, and as much beautiful Red and Green Cabbage as you have recipes to handle!" Jessie & Ben

In other sorts of vendor news:

Chocosol has settled into the neighbourhood, at Dufferin and Dupont (225 Geary second Floor). Mathieu can tell you about some of the many projects they've got underway.

Kind Greens has job postings for an internship and a farm manager position: http://www.goodworkcanada.ca/greenjobs.php?id=16533

There are only a handful of tickets left for "Leap into Hops", a wonderful evening of farm fare, beer tasting and learning about organic hops production with Shane Eby, next Wednesday at 7 pm in the neighbourhood. Tickets must be reserved in advance by contacting me via market@dufferinpark.ca or 416-536-9103.

See you at the market!

Anne Freeman

P.S. This Friday, Feb 24, 7:15pm-8:15pm in the rinkhouse will be the first Dufferin Grove Community Garden Club meeting. We'll discuss plans for this growing season, workshop ideas and dates, and garden session times. We'll also plant a few seeds and share some sparkling water spiked with our park-grown and preserved elderberry syrup. Come early and enjoy a delicious community supper (served between 6-7pm). We're excited to meet new gardeners of all experience levels and to welcome back returning garden club volunteers! To join the garden club email list and receive notification of upcoming garden sessions, send us a message at gardens@dufferinpark.
