Weekly Market Notes for October 01, 2015

Hello Market Friends:

COME JOIN US ON THE RINK! October is a month to celebrate, as the farmers bring in abundant harvests full of the delicious flavours of fall. There will be lots to eat on the spot, too, so you can linger to chat on what promises to be a lovely afternoon.

Last week, Colette Murphy of Urban Harvest (and Earthly Paradise) brought in some samples of the rainbow-coloured assortment of crops they're growing for seed. Like the song says, what a wonderful world. All these beautiful vegetables have great names, too: Bulgarian Carrot Peppers, Blueberries Tomatoes, Shooting Star Eggplants....They'll capture many a gardener's imagination, and then their tastebuds! Urban Harvest seeds are not genetically engineered to tolerate toxic sprays, or patented to prevent farmers and gardeners from saving seeds to plant again. This means that, despite decades of dedicated work, Colette will never get rich -- if you measure wealth in dollars, that is. We're so lucky to have her at the market.

"Everdale is bringing a beautiful spread of squash this week. Pumpkin pie is calling!! Lots of greens, including arugula, radishes, salad turnips, sweet red peppers, celery, cilantro, dill, parsley, basil, kohlrabi, beets, onions and our super sweet carrots! See you there," Kyle

Kyle's mention of pumpkin pie was enough to make me pick up the phone and check...and the answer is YES! Defloured (Krista and Chris) will be bringing pumpkin pies, both small and large, and maple tarts made with Blythe's maple syrup, too.

We've decided to change the Afri-Can Food Basket listing to Ujamaa Farm, the name the growers use for this particular project. Ujamaa is a Swahili word, variously translated as collective, brotherhood, socialism, or extended family. While Anan Lololi comes to Dufferin Grove most often, some weeks we get a chance to meet participants in Ujamaa Farm's training program as well. Graduates of the program are now farming in Ontario, and Jamaica too.

Be sure to bring your knives along for sharpening by Mike Fohr this time.

Mushrooms (both cultivated and wild), fish, flowers, and ferments are just a few of the highlights this week. Call your pals and head on over.

See you at the market!

Anne Freeman
