Weekly Market Notes for September 23, 2010

Hello Market Friends:

I must admit that it has been difficult to come to the end of a glorious row of hot, sunny Thursdays, and remember the challenges of markets when the weather is 'less than perfect'. Last week's setup was one of the wettest on record, but we were happy to see many of you arriving all the same, keeping up the Dufferin reputation for hardy and reliable customers. Thank you for your loyalty! Whether the weather co-operates or not, the food coming in at this time of year is too good to miss: Ted Thorpe's beautiful rosettes of tatsoi, Adrian Eppinger's many-coloured eggplants, Blythe Weber's weekly additions to her pantryful of preserves, Irina Alecu's golden honey...I could go on and on, but here's some news from the vendors:

Sosnickis report: "We'll have a good amount of sweet corn for Dufferin Grove," says Ben! That wraps up corn for the season - and yes, the fresh corn is still sweet, not starchy! Lots and lots of fresh dug Sweet Potatoes, Cabbages, lots and lots of sweet Peppers of all different colours, purple & orange Carrots, fresh pulled Leeks, purple & Golden Beets, Onions, Eggplant, Potatoes, and we'll check out the big squash patch...Happy Fall!

"We are very excited to report that we will be bringing fresh Matsutake and fresh Chanterelles to tomorrow’s market. Finally!!" Meg, Seth & Jonathan of Forbes Wild Foods

James of Nujima writes: "This year's equinox has arrived bringing what I feel is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. Secretly though it is my favorite time of year because it is pie season! Not just any pie season, it's Pumpkin Pie season! Yes those cute little Sugar Pumpkins are abundant right now. So we quietly stalked and captured some. Squealing with glee they knew they were off to be made into delicious treats. This week and for the next few weeks we will be serving up scrumptious 100% Vegan Pumpkin Pie Tarts and possibly some Raw Pumpkin Pie for the offering. We also will have Organic Apple Tarts and Apple Strudel. Spring rolls are delicious but to keep it seasonal we will be making Fresh Raw Spicy Autumn Rolls, made with fresh local roots and veggies in a rice wrapper with a tangy Thai dipping sauce. We will also have available enhanced versions of our regular Raw treats including coconut macaroons, gluten free oat cookies and brownies with vanilla icing. Made with love by our family for you!"

It's time to talk turkeys. Ask Irene (Deer Valley) or Sandy (Berettas) to get the details for Thanksgiving orders.

In what may be her last trip of the season, Laura Sabourin (Feast of Fields) will be bringing pears, Asian pears, grapes, green gages plums, apples and wild blueberries.

Don't forget to bring your scissors, knives or other tools for expert sharpening by Exact Edge.

And that's not all....

See you at the market!
