Ken Whiteley’s “Sunday Gospel Series”

Calvin Cooke, Sacred Steel Master

Sunday, March 4, 2:00 p.m. at Hugh’s Room

Calvin Cooke is a legendary figure in the tremendously exciting kind of music called “Sacred Steel”. Sometimes referred to as “the Muddy Waters of the Sacred Steel”, guitarist Calvin Cooke can make the pedal steel guitar talk, sing, laugh and weep with spiritual fervor. Both he and his wife, singer Grace Cooke are outstanding vocalists. Calvin is a veteran of more than 40 years of playing gospel music. Ken Whiteley is also a veteran of many years and his gospel series at Hugh’s Room is always an eagerly anticipated event. Also on this show will be the wonderful Bucky Berger on drums and Ken’s son, Ben Whiteley on bass.

On April 22nd, Canadian folk music legend Penny Lang will be here from B.C. Joining Ken, Ben and Penny will be brother and sister Pat & Rhonelle Patrick. Pat has one of the country’s deepest bass voices and Rhonelle is a fabulous singer and percussionist. Rounding the lineup is the incomparable “Uncle Mike” Roestig.
