Irish Pub Night

This weekend: good food and music at St.Anne's Church.

The St.Anne's Music and Drama Society is having a fundraiser this weekend to send their choir to the 2013 Gilbert and Sullivan festival in Buxton, England.

Saturday night at 7.30 and on Sunday afternoon at 2.

For $20 you get to donate to their cause and eat Irish stew and biscuits and home baking on Saturday, or Irish soup and biscuits and home baking on Sunday. The difference between their supper and the Dufferin Grove Friday Night Supper is that they'll have lots of live music -- Irish comic songs -- and a cash bar with good Irish beer, which we don't have.

Setting up the "Ward 18 Parks conservancy" means going to talk to lots of people and groups in the neighbourhood. This has brought some nice surprises and new friendships. One discovery is St.Anne's Church -- it's that beautiful domed church with Group of Seven paintings throughout, and remarkable acoustics, on Gladstone. It turns out they're also the home of MADS -- St.Anne's Music and Drama Society, which is having a fundraiser this weekend to send their choir to the 2013 Gilbert and Sullivan festival in Buxton, England.

Gary van der Meer, the new priest at St.Anne's, toured me around the Parish Hall, which is HUGE, with a number of theater group tenants -- and a monthly community dinner not unlike the park dinner up the street at Dufferin Grove. MADS is doing two Irish fundraisers for their trip, one on Saturday night at 7.30 and one on Sunday afternoon at 2. For $20 you get to donate to their cause and eat Irish stew and biscuits and home baking on Satruday, or Irish soup and biscuits and home baking on Sunday. The difference between them and us at Dufferin Grove is that they'll have Irish comic songs, which we don't have at our Friday Night Suppers, and a cash bar with good Irish beer, which we really don't. (Hm)
