Weekly Market Notes for February 21, 2013

Hello Market Friends:

If it hasn't been snowing, it's been raining or blowing on Thursdays of late, but this week there's a sun peeking out on Environment Canada's page, so come on over, and bring your appetite! We'll have a full house of vendors.

Spring messages are coming from the farms, as seed orders arrive and plans take shape. Ted Thorpe says the salad mix that self-seeded in his greenhouse is a couple of inches high, so it won't be long until we get an early taste of that. Here's the news from Sosnickis:

"Ben and I have spent most of this week (when not trimming cabbage) in the middle, warm greenhouse. We've seeded oodles of onions and even transplanted heirloom tomatoes! Yep, tomatoes I seeded in January are now just growing away getting ready to be transplanted into the other greenhouse early April to bring on those nice, early tomatoes! Lettuces, chard and other early crops have hit the dirt! We are on for a great new season!! We are pulling back at market quite a bit to do a really great job in the greenhouses which takes most of our time once we start. This is why I won't have much of the prepared food from now on -but we'll have Raw Sauerkraut and frozen Beans, lots of Fingerling Potatoes and big, beautiful Cabbages!" Jess & Ben

We're delighted to announce the return of Andrew Akiwenzie, with fish from up the Bruce Peninsula. Natasha has had the smoker going, so there will be several flavours of superb smoked fish, and frozen fish as well.

Kevin Hamilton (Shared Harvest Community Farm) will also be back, with ferments, dried herbs, winter veggies and some extra goodies from Plan B.

See you at the market!

Anne Freeman

P.S. Puppets on Ice is this Sunday, February 24, from 1-4 pm at the Dufferin Grove rink, and there's a Shinny Tournament for under 13s at Campbell Rink on the same day from 1-3 pm. Inquire/sign up at the snack bar ahead of time.
