Weekly Market Notes for March 23, 2006

Dear market friends,

Anne Freeman's plane may just be landing as I write -- she gets back from Mexico today and tomorrow she'll be managing the market again. But for now, the market news from me:

Maria Nasterska will be back tomorrow with all her soya sweets, and Beata Macklin will probably be back too, with tea and chocolate. The market will be a little less crowded since the rink has now closed for the season and the compressors are turned off (although it's been so cold that the ice is still there, a little bumpy but fun for sliding). More market news:

From Mark of Greenfields:

"I know it's not market related but I thought our LOCAL team could use our support. Go Leafs Go! Alright, lots of nice produce available this week; starting with LOCAL; Beets, Carrots, Shiitake Mushroom, Parsnips, Squash, Rutabaga, Watercress, Spring Mix and Mustard Greens. We will have a limited amount of Greenfields own Salad Mix as well as nice bunches of Red Russian Kale. Other items here are: Green Beans, Broccoli, Celery, Black & Green Kale, Red Chard, Collards, Tomato, Leeks and Salad Greens. Good selection of Fruit including; Avocado, Apple, Grapefruit, Kiwi, Lemon, Orange, Pears and Plums."

From Mary Lou of Beretta's:

"Great to see friends returning to the market from extended trips and holidays. Two weeks remaining for the great March specials:Ground beef, Stew beef, Braising ribs, Nitrite free bacon, Chicken wings (must be pre-order), Shish Kebobs. Keep in mind any special requests for family celebration time at Easter coming up April 16th, Hams, whole turkey will be available, beef roasts, or pork roasts.

This week I will be sampling a new product of pepperoni at the market."

From Irene of Deer Valley Farm

"A fresh batch of 100% pure venison burger patties, breakfast sausages & smoked (Montreal style) slices are available. Venison chili for eat-in or take home. This will be the last week for cuts of fresh (aged) venison...Shop early for best selection. For info about the health benefits of Elk Velvet Antler capsules or Emu oil, nutritional benefits, cooking guidelines or recipes for venison … visit: www.venison.ca"

During March, the park is about as brown as it could be. But in front of the rink house, the tulips are up a few inches already. And the park bakers have a lot more space, since the zamboni is not parked in the garage any more. The bakers light the fires in the park ovens at 5.30 a.m., and now they don't have to wait so long for the sky to get light, either.

See you at the leading-up-to-spring market!
