Weekly Market Notes for September 22, 2011

Hello Market Friends:

What a happy-eating time of year. My freezer is looking like a jewel box of market treasures, there are recipes strewn about the kitchen and on the computer, and looking at the list of what's coming in this week, there's lots more to 'put by' and to savour while harvest season continues. Here's the news:

"This week Feast of Fields will be bringing cases of blue grapes for juice, jelly and jam making. The grapes will be packed in 10 kg boxes. Yield using a juicer or similar is usually 70% = 7 litres, and cost is $25/box. Anyone wanting to make large quantities of juice (or wine) please email ahead for a special order. Btw we'll have apples, pears, grapes, plums, maybe a few more peaches and table grapes too." Laura

Pine River Organic Farm will be in attendance with beans, eggplant, carrots, squash and hopefully peas and zucchini.

Sosnickis' contribution: "This week we have begun our leek harvest! Beautiful big Leeks, fresh dug Potatoes, Cooking Onions, Sweet Onions, Shallot bunches, fresh Sweet Corn (oh yes, still fresh, sweet corn!!) Also new this week: fresh Spinach! Lots and lots of Sweet Red Peppers, the big Red Sweet Shepherds, all sorts of Hot Peppers, (even Habaneros!) Eggplant, Savoy, Red & Green Cabbages, Heirloom Tomatoes, Watermelons, Kestrel, Golden & Chioggia Beet bunches, Kale & some Green Beans! See everyone with a great September load! :)" Jessie & Ben

Greenfields' news: "We are finally getting some much needed rain. Adrian will be back at market this week. He'll be bringing lots of Pie Pumpkins, Acorn and Delicata Squash, the last of the Savoy Cabbages, Radicchio, Parsley, Kale, Garlic and bunches of Beets (red and golden). New this week will be Leeks, Fennel and a small amount of Broccoli."

Growing Spaces news: "The first batch of Fresh Apple Butter with no added sugar is ready!! Packed with this year's first apples, this apple butter is delicious especially on a fresh piece of bread right out of the oven! As well we have a new batch of Morning Glory jam (for real), Zingy Rhubarb Jam, bean burgers, and Grandma's Chili sauce." Blythe

Come early for fresh and smoked Georgian Bay whitefish from the Akiwenzies.

The Organic Supper Club Menu--a bit different every week, but with a few favourites repeated!

  • 5 Layered Fiesta Dip
  • Roasted Red Pepper and Walnut Dip (local red peppers)
  • Coconut Moroccan Curry (local Potatoes, Garlic and onions)
  • Summer Fresh Quinoa Salad (local seasonal Veggies)
  • Cashew Lentil Soup
  • Ultimate Omega Trail Mix
  • Goji Chia Seed Granola (local oats and maple syrup)
  • Raw Kale and Beet Salad (local beets and kale)

Don't forget to get all your knives, scissors and other tools beautifully sharpened up while Exact Edge (Denzil) is at the market.

In case you're wondering, the annual move up to the rinkpad (to use the hockey lights at sunset) will take place the first market in October. Plans are in the works to beautify the summer (rinkpad) skatepark with some artists' help in spring 2012. Right now, donations of exterior paint are being sought. If you have some leftovers (oil or latex, still in good shape) of any great colours (sorry, bland colours need not apply), bring them to the market and leave them under the bench inside the rinkhouse (next to the washrooms).

See you at the market!

Anne Freeman

P.S. TO's first Garlic Festival is coming right up, this Sunday at the Brick Works. For more information, go to: http://www.torontogarlicafestival.ca
P.P.S. In case you didn't see it, here's a nice article about Dufferin Grove by Peter Kuitenbrouwer in last Saturday's National Post: http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/09/17/dufferin-grove-park-isnt-like-any-other-in-the-city-and-the-locals-aim-to-keep-it-that-way/

Slogan spotted on a Vancouver farmers' market bag: You are what you eat. Prepare to meet your maker.
