My mom goes to the vegetable gardens every morning like 6am. Photo: her harvest in the summer

Pig feet cooking on charcoal. The soup is wonderful

Sausages drying in the early morning of the “ham” day-2

I’m learning to take over the day-2 tasks from my mom.

First decent loaf in months

He suddenly appeared on the dining table one evening

95 year old couple taking daikon seeds off the pods.

He was in good health then, but now is suffering from back pain and doesn’t want to eat

Roasting eggplants for baingan bartha and babaganoush

The old folks liked the dishes for their baby food like texture.

Amane gets called on the pig days — when we load a pig on the truck to take ferry.

...After that he comes to the home to hang out with the seniors

There’s a young bucket maker on the neighboring island (the slaughterhouse is there too). He made the bucket, and here it is waiting to get filled with fresh miso

We needed a bucket big enough to hold 30kg of miso

Me in the early hours of day-2

Picture taken by Keiko (my mom). The stillness of the early morning air reminds me of good old baking Thursdays.

Rice field just before harvest

Young rice

Schlegel’s tree frog

There should be many of those frogs here but its rare that I see them out. This one was just sitting on the road. I poked its butt because I didn’t want it to get run over. It reluctantly walked, jumped, and climbed up the tree. I fell in love with its sleepy eyes.

Now I’m in Ojika (the island where I used to live until I went to school in Fukuoka) for the first time in a year. My friends and I went out to the sea to scatter our dear friend’s ashes yesterday. It was very beautiful. Winds picked up today and the ferry is cancelled. I can’t go home tomorrow.
