From the invitation: In appreciation of a long line of Dufferin Grove gardeners, there will be a little picture gallery and some stories about people who have helped add to the flora (and therefore the fauna) of the park over the long haul. They include Rob Rennick, Arie Kamp, Gene Threndyle, Ben Figueredo, Annick Mitchell, Georgie Donais, Clement Kent, John Ota, and -- with his many plant donations -- Lou Micelli. And, of course, a big appreciation for those of you who have been working alongside Skylar in the past two years (or over the past 12 years that she's been involved). (And to David Rothberg, who donated the tandoor years ago.)
Skylar Hill-Jackson has been a Dufferin Grove community gardener for twelve years, the last two as the coordinator -- a real challenge during the covid restrictions, but so much got done. See the garden diary
Skylar built on the contributions of community gardeners that went before
The new Parks and Rec policy on the use of the ovens requires us to pay over $100 for using the ovens we built and looked after. That didn't seem like a good idea, so we brought over the portable tandoor instead.
...and Danielda ended up making 20 more....
Thank you very much for this award -- it is a privilege to be part of such a unique park. Gardening and being in nature has been my life-line during retirement and especially during the last two years of on again/off again lockdowns and COVID-19 restrictions. I have learned a lot about plants. As a city-raised girl I knew very little about plants and gardening until I began volunteering in the Dufferin Grove Park gardens. Now I see 'food' everywhere throughout the city. The DGP Garden Co-op relies on neighbors and volunteers for it's success. I like this quote from Audrey Hepburn: "To Plant A Garden is to Believe in Tomorrow."
