Weekly Market Notes for February 02, 2012

Hello Market Friends:

It's business as usual this week, but I thought I should alert you to the possibility that a temporary closure could be ahead. We just can't be sure what the coming days will bring:

From Jutta Mason: "At the market, Dufferin skaters and shoppers can have HOT CHOCOLATE by the campfire, and idea swap about the possibility of a city-worker lockout starting Sunday 12:01am. The clock is ticking on the labour negotiations between the City and CUPE Local 416 (e.g. zamboni drivers). Most of the rink staff are CUPE Local 79, so they're not up for lockout yet. But we heard that the city might just turn off the compressors and lock the clubhouse anyway. That would mean no skating, and no market either.

CUPE Local 416 say that if the city locks out the zamboni drivers but the rink is still running, they'll come and help, as volunteers, because they don't want the rinks to close either."

PLEASE WRITE TO COUNCILLOR ANA BAILAO TO TELL HER YOU WANT THE RINKHOUSE AND THE MARKET TO BE OPEN IN THE EVENT OF A LOCKOUT.

Her e-mail is <councillor_bailao@toronto.ca>

We'll do our best to update you as this situation unfolds. If there's news, please pass it along to your friends and neighbours.

Now for our previously scheduled food and farm news:'

"Well, another week and another harvest! This week Kind Organics will have a New Salad, "February Blend". We also have larger bags of sprouts and shoots, and tinctures and tea blends. Come by early to get your salads though, supplies are limited." Sandra Dombi

Sosnickis' contribution: "Ben will be coming with our usual offerings including our Potatoes, Cabbages, Leeks, Celeriac and Garlic. NEW this week is our Super Food Sauerkraut! Raw, unpasteurized and fermented to perfection! We've done green and RED kraut this year! Enjoy - it's a great batch! Also lots of Perogies, Sweet Corn and Vegan Cabbage Rolls!" Jess & Ben

"This week will be Greenfields' last market for the winter season. I'll have lots for everyone to stock up on: Freshly dug Leeks, plenty of Carrots, lots of large firm Celeriac, the always plentiful Sunchokes (aka Jerusalem Artichokes), Shallots, Garlic, red and golden Beets, and giant Rutabagas as well as Pie Pumpkins and Winter Squash." Lorenz Eppinger

My favourite salad at this moment (market-ingredient-centric, of course) is chopped watermelon radishes, carrots, pea shoots and minced shallots, plus a sprinkling of toasted sunflower seeds, tossed with apple cider vinegar, olive oil and a drizzle of honey. So pretty, and so good!

Not only is it Groundhog Day, it's Colette Murphy's first day back with seeds and other goodies for a new year of garden dreaming. This is a sure sign that spring will come again.

See you at the market!

Anne Freeman

P.S. For two days every year, women hockey players of all levels enjoy the thrill of playing the game they love, under the open sky in a supportive and fun environment at Dufferin Rink. Regular Shinny is off from 7-10pm Friday and again from 9am-7pm Saturday. Friday night supper is a small one dish affair for folks coming to watch the game (very little available seating in the clubhouse, which will be shared with the women of winter tournament for one night). Pleasure skating is still always on throughout. http://www.thewomenofwinter.com/home.html
